ICT jargon buster
ICT can be full of technical language that can be at best tedious and at worst confusing to those people in the sector trying to work with ICT. This page will list some of the most commonly used jargon along with a simple explanation of what is meant by it.
ADSL: Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. A fast connection to the internet that allows you to use your phone while connected to the internet.
Anti-virus: Software that protects your computer from infection by viruses.These are usually transmitted by the internet or disks.
Backup: To copy files, from your computer to another data storage medium (such as floppy disk, zip disk, CD or tape)as a precaution in case your hard drive fails or is affected by a virus. It is essential for all organisations to do this, though it can often be overlooked.
CMS: Content Management System. A piece of software that allows updating of information easily on a website, such as the one used for this website.
